Well, the tournament has come to a close. Yesterday we beat Chinese Taipei in 3. This team upset quite a few top teams and played five gamers with others. Today we beat Turkey in four. We finished strong although we only placed 9th. That was a lot lower than our expectations but we at least were able to pull together and finish the best position given the circumstances. Wow, this is my last World Championships as a player! Kind of sad…but I am looking forward to next years competitions including the qualifier for the Olympics World Cup. But we have quite a few other important tournaments before we get there.

Tomorrow 2006 USA National team will part ways… Some of us will travel back to Colorado Springs before driving or catching a flight to our hometown. Others of us will catch a flight from San Fran. From there I will travel back to Baton Rouge to see my family for a quick visit before prepare to go to play my next season in Brazil. I’ve got lots to do with only a short time to do it. I’d better start making my list. I will update my schedule as soon as the federation post it.

Another several days have past…boy it’s been a rough round two and we find ourselves playing for ninth. Just some tough breaks. We opened the second round verses Azerbaijan losing a tough five gamer. Playing Russia was a disaster…OK not completely, well ultimately it was a loss in three. But we led each set. Tom our assistant coach made a comment that we are the best team until 10 points! That’s horrible. We look so promising, but then we breakdown. Too many errors, hitting, passing, serving and balls hit off the block…. We final got a victory in the second round verses Germany. Germany is being coached by my former coach Giovanni Guidetti of Chieri Volley… Anyway we manage to fight to pull out the victory in five. Going into the match we knew that we were in a must win situation in order to try to play for fifth through eighth. Though we won the match, we were still short just 7 points! BOOO! And Netherlands beat China. Tomorrow we will play Chinese Taipei… This team runs a very quick offense and lots of combinations with their opposite and middle hitters. Should be a fun match.

Let’s see where did I leave off. OK Cameroon 0-3 USA…Brazil 3-0 Brazil…good recovery for our next match again Puerto Rico 0-3 USA. Travel to Osaka, training, another day of training, video and meetings…match against China 3-1 China. BOOO! We totally had them on their heels controlling the first set and even the second set leading at both technical timeouts. But somehow the match slipped through our hands. Our execution fell short a bit and we just didn’t seem to bring the usual fight. Well, that was yesterday. Today’s a new day and we’ve already got to focus on Azerbaijan a team we have not yet beaten. This morning practice we worked on our triple blocking their outside which we haven’t trained in a while. I am looking to have a better blocking match as my personal goal and a team victory.

GO USA!

2-0 Not a bad way to start off the World Championships. Both matches fought until the end, back to back five gamers! I am really proud of my team’s steadfastness. This is USA volleyball. Fight until the end. After our second tough five gamer win in a row, another team’s stats technician replied “God is American.” Well, I know that God has shown us favor. And I thank Him for allowing me to get my rhythm back hitting. Still can be better. But Amen. Today we were off from competition but we’ll train and watch video.
